Assessment of Carbon sequestration potential of mangroves in Palghar district

In February 2026, TERI successfully delivered a six-day residential Capacity Building and Training Programme for officials and frontline staff of the Mangrove Cell, Palghar Forest Department, demonstrating TERI's end-to-end capability from programme design to field implementation. The training aimed to assist professionals from the Mangrove Foundation in mastering mangrove ecosystem carbon inventory methods to assess the contribution of these ecosystems to atmospheric carbon sequestration.

Developing a Voluntary Carbon Market Project with FPOs for Agroforestry Plantation in Saharanpur District, Uttar Pradesh

Background

The project has been conceptualized as a community-based agroforestry carbon finance initiative to enable small and marginal farmers in the Saharanpur district to participate in the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) through a grouped project approach. The initiative is based on the premise that agroforestry can simultaneously enhance farm resilience, diversify income sources, increase tree cover outside forests, and generate measurable carbon removals that can be converted into carbon credits.

Germplasm Collection, Molecular and Biochemical characterisation of Boswellia Serrata (Traina & Planch) for its conservation with special reference to Madhya Pradesh

Boswellia serrata is a valuable tree for producing pharmaceutically important gum and resin, but it is considered an endangered species. The current project aims to genetically identify elite Boswellia serrata for its conservation and multiplication to ensure the species' sustainable availability at an affordable cost. This study is expected to result in a well-characterized, genetically diverse core germplasm with economically important metabolites.

Assess the Cost of Rangeland Degradation, Deforestation, and Desertification in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The main objective of this project is to support a core team in the World Bank to develop a set of technical activities in order to deliver the following outputs: (i) assessment of the costs of deforestation and degradation, in the mountain forests and mangroves; and (ii) ecosystem valuation of the mountain forests, as well as the assessment of the provisioning of key ecosystem services.

The protected areas in India have been identified to have potential of generating around 10,000,000 Carbon Emission Reduction (CERs), the tradable form of carbon, which could be traded in the carbon market.  Finance through carbon related projects could yield additional finance which is required to address the issues of community alternative livelihood and mitigation strategies for human wildlife conflict.
