Industrial Biotechnology

TERI leverages specialised microbes to deliver sustainable solutions across the oil, gas, and coal sectors. Key applications include the assessment and bioremediation of sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and emerging pollutants such as microplastics and persistent organic contaminants; Microbial enhancement of methane production in CBM and underground reservoirs; Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) and Biological control of paraffin deposition in oil infrastructure. The area also advances Bio CCUS by converting captured CO₂ into value added gaseous and biochemical products. Integrated platforms combining microbiology, metagenomics, and process engineering further enable industrial enzyme production, biodegradable plastics, and fermentation based CO₂ bioconversion, supporting the circular bioeconomy.
