The Global Context: A Race Against Time
Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources while ensuring equitable access for coastal communities, particularly small-scale fishers. Key targets include addressing overfishing and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing (Target 14.4), expanding marine conservation areas (Target 14.5), reforming harmful subsidies (Target 14.6), and strengthening market access for artisanal fishers (Target 14.b).
The objective of the initiative is to catalyse green growth in the state of Assam through innovations such as green budgeting, Green Public Procurement (GPP), and sensitization on green finance mechanisms. While environment departments generally have the mandate to deal with issues related to climate change, sustainable development, and similar areas, their locus standi on implementation is comparatively weak due to the low budget allocations they receive.
In a significant collaboration, TERI and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) are launching a comprehensive Carbon Footprint Evaluation of India’s dairy supply chain. As the world's leading dairy producer, India's sector accounts for about 25% of global milk output and is vital for providing nutrition, supporting rural employment, and driving economic progress. Yet, like all food production systems, dairy farming generates significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily from enteric fermentation, manure handling, and energy consumption in processing and distribution.
This study aims to conduct a detailed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of sugar-derived Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with the specific objective of establishing India-specific emission values in line with ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This initiative leverages India’s unique position as the world’s second-largest sugar producer and its substantial sugar industry infrastructure, which comprises over 350 mills, 5 million hectares under cultivation, and approximately 4.5 million tonnes of molasses produced annually.
TERI has played a central role in advancing India’s critical minerals agenda through its extensive policy, research, and stakeholder engagement contributions. Under the National Critical Mineral Mission, TERI drafted, validated, and finalized the Mission document that was approved by the Cabinet in January 2025.
Strengthening India’s Innovation Ecosystem: The National S&T Survey
The National Science and Technology (S&T) Survey is a flagship initiative designed to systematically map the resources fueling India’s research and development (R&D) landscape. By capturing high-quality data on expenditure, manpower, and infrastructure, the survey provides the empirical foundation necessary to monitor the national innovation ecosystem and benchmark India’s progress against global standards.
TERI Knowledge Resource Centre (TERI KRC), is committed to fostering sustainable development and empowering individuals through innovative skill development and entrepreneurship programs. Over the years, we have conducted several residential skill development and online entrepreneurship development training programs, focusing on solar energy and waste management.
Impactful Training Programs:Residential Skill Development Programs
The study aims to develop an SDG Blueprint to inform integrated approaches on sustainable agriculture at the national level in India. It is crucial that the lenses of sustainable development, climate action, value chains and multi-stakeholder approaches be considered for sustainable agriculture to contribute towards food security, livelihoods, and ecosystem integrity. The SDG Blueprint which focuses on the national policy interface between SDGs and sustainable agriculture to inform policy and praxis.
The objective of the project is to accelerate transition of Indian industry sector to a low carbon pathway by an integrated approach which focuses on decarbonizing the energy intensive industries (steel, cement) including associated value chains.
TERI is committed to offering expert training across various research fields to enhance the skills of both professionals and students. These courses aim to provide individuals eager to expand their knowledge and competencies in the sector with access to cutting-edge information.
