This report is Volume I of the Beyond Mobility: Unlocking the Second-Life Battery Opportunity series.

Despite the growing recognition of second-life batteries as a valuable resource, comprehensive, multi-regional analyses that systematically examine global policies, regulatory frameworks, case studies, application landscapes, and business models in an integrated manner remain limited. Most existing studies focus on specific geographies, single application areas, policies, or individual dimensions of the second-life battery ecosystem (such as techno-economics or battery degradation) in isolation. There is an evident need for a holistic knowledge compendium that brings together the full spectrum of global developments, experiences, and learnings relevant to second-life batteries, interpreting them through the lens of an emerging market such as India.

Globally, 80+ second-life battery projects have been identified and analysed for this study, spanning Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and the Australia–Pacific region. The specific objectives of the compendium are to:

  • Examine and analyse global case studies, pilot projects, and commercial deployments of second-life batteries across different regions and application segments.
  • Review global policy frameworks on EV battery repurposing.
  • Identify and understand key enabling factors for the successful adoption of second-life batteries.
  • Derive structured insights and policy-relevant learnings for India’s evolving battery ecosystem and energy transition goals.
