Indian food is deeply rooted in tradition, sustainability, and a harmonious relationship with nature. For centuries, traditional practices have emphasized using local, seasonal ingredients that suit the regional climate, contributing to both ecological balance and health. From the climate-friendly cultivation of millets to ancient storage techniques and powerful superfoods like amla and sattu, traditional Indian food wisdom shows us how to nourish ourselves and the planet. This approach to food promotes well-being while honoring the environment and cultural heritage.
Boswellia serrata is a valuable tree for producing pharmaceutically important gum and resin, but it is considered an endangered species. The current project aims to genetically identify elite Boswellia serrata for its conservation and multiplication to ensure the species' sustainable availability at an affordable cost. This study is expected to result in a well-characterized, genetically diverse core germplasm with economically important metabolites.
The center prepares annual air and water quality status reports for the state of Maharashtra, a project being sponsored by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). MPCB regularly monitors the qualitative state of the water resources across the state as well as the air quality across various locations in the state. TERI has been preparing these status reports by statistically compiling and analysing the secondary data received from MPCB whilst developing graphical and spatial illustrations.
The Climate Innovators Challenge for Youth (CLICY) is a flagship initiative by Harit under HCLFoundation in collaboration with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) aimed at empowering college and university students across Karnataka to take meaningful climate action by encouraging young innovators to identify local environmental challenges and develop technology-driven, context-specific solutions through creative problem-solving, systems thinking, and hands-on learning.
Project Overview: Developing Voluntary Carbon Market Projects for Agroforestry Plantations in Aligarh Forest Circle
The Aligarh Forest Circle Agroforestry Initiative is a carbon finance project designed to bridge the gap between climate mitigation and rural economic development. Launched in 2024, the initiative promotes strategic tree plantation on agricultural lands to enhance carbon sequestration while simultaneously boosting farm productivity.
The project is designed to promote sustainable agroforestry by encouraging tree plantation on agricultural lands, while generating measurable climate mitigation benefits and enhancing rural livelihoods. Implemented as an Afforestation, Reforestation, and Revegetation initiative under the Voluntary Carbon Market framework, it focuses on establishing tree plantations to enhance carbon sequestration, improve farm productivity, and deliver co-benefits such as biodiversity conservation and soil health restoration.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), and other local stakeholders, is implementing an initiative to plan and develop Clean Air Zones (CAZs) in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
The development of a detailed CAZ (clean air zone) plan would focus on measures related to traffic and transportation (such as pedestrianization, cycle tracks, and EV mobility), urban planning (land use plans, heritage conservation), emission control, air quality monitoring and dust control. Through this plan, the program seeks to prioritize solutions based on emission reduction to enhance air quality in the study area. This approach aligns with sectoral sustainability goals by addressing environmental, social, and economic aspects of urban air quality improvement.
Hindustan Zinc is the World’s largest and India’s only integrated zinc producer. The organization has collaborated with TERI for the development of a green belt over Jarofix Dump Site 2 at CLZS Chanderiya, Rajasthan. The project aims restoration of industrial wasteland using mycorrhizal technology to transform environmentally hazardous waste site into biologically active and ecologically stable area, contributing to sustainable land management and environmental protection.
'Simplifying Sustainability’ is a radio campaign from The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in association with 92.7 BIG FM.
The initiative aims to make sustainable practices easier to understand and implement in everyday life.
