As India builds its infrastructure to cater to increased energy demand, energy experts warn against excessive lock-ins that the country might regret later. According to Energizing India, a report brought out by Shell along with TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) and Council on Energy, Environment and Water, India is likely to rely on coal for 55 per cent or more of its primary energy needs through the next three decades.

A private university in Jaipur, Chandigarh Airport and a corporate campus in Hyderabad are among the projects which have been awarded green certification by TERI for practicing policies for sustainable development and improving quality of human life. Seven projects were felicitated, including three 5-star ratings, two 4-star ratings and two 3-star ratings, by Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), a tool developed by TERI to ensure energy efficient building construction.
