Dr Subhasis Das, an environmental microbiologist, has been with TERI since 2013 and is currently a Fellow and Area Convenor at the Microbial Biotechnology area of the Environmental and Industrial Biotechnology Division. His research interests include the development and application of environmental biotechnological techniques for organic pollution bioremediation and degraded land restoration, smart agriculture including controlled-release fertiliser applications, and plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial diversity. His current research focuses on using microbiomes to predict the effectiveness of bioremediation, with his laboratory testing and reporting on various microbial and microbiome-based techniques.
He has successfully demonstrated bio-based technologies in field conditions, transitioning from laboratory setups to real-world applications. Dr Das is engaged in several ongoing projects supported by government agencies and corporates, and has established multiple bilateral and multilateral collaborations at both national and international levels in the field of environmental microbiology. He has published peer-reviewed research articles in high-impact journals, contributed book chapters, authored technical reports, and edited two books with international publishers.
Dr Das is an active member of several professional associations, including the Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), the Asia Pacific Chemical Biological and Environmental Engineering Society (APCBEES), and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). His research and expertise have contributed to the development of new technologies for managing and remediating polluted environments, as well as the implementation of policy directives for government. He played a significant role as a Bioremediation Specialist and Quality Control Engineer in the international project “Remediation of Contaminated Features SEK1” awarded to TERI in Kuwait, funded by the Kuwait Oil Company.
Dr Das holds an M.Sc. in Microbiology from Vidyasagar University, an M.Phil. in Environmental Science from the University of Kalyani, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the ICAR–Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack, awarded in 2014.
