India’s continued commitment to achieving the clean energy transition is well recognized. At COP26, India announced the highly ambitious goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil generation capacity by 2030. To achieve India’s commitment, the need for large-scale energy storage needs no emphasis. Pumped Storage Hydropower, being a mature and proven technology with operational experience in the country and also having the added advantage of providing grid stability, assumes top priority.
While providing a brief perspective of the growth and status of pumped storage hydropower in the world and India, the report suggests measures for accelerating the development of pumped storage plants in the country.
