The ‘Tata Chemicals Ltd. (TCL)- TERI Centre of Excellence (CoE)on Biochemicals’ has been jointly established by TCL and TERI at TERI Gram, Gwal Pahari, Gurugram, to create an Industry-Academia collaborative Bio-Hub platform for advancing innovative technologies for platform and specialty biochemicals.
Biochemicals, including bio-based chemicals, enzymes, and polymers, contribute immensely towards expansion of India’s Bio Industrial segment, the largest contributor (>48%) for India’s bioeconomy ($195.3 billion in 2025), contributing nearly 5% to the National GDP. This is a crucial public-private partnership step towards accelerating India’s transition to sustainable biochemical production. This is the first of its kind biomanufacturing hub established by TERI, in India with the support from Tata Chemicals to foster translational research in the biochemicals domain.
TCL-TERI CoE is well equipped with the state of art small, medium and large-scale fermentation facilities for upstream production of fermentation biochemicals and various pilot scale downstream processing equipment for downstream processing with a goal to demonstrate integrated technologies at higher Technology Readiness Scale (TRL 7, a critical step towards commercialization).
Coordinated by Dr Sanjukta Subudhi, this center’s initial research has paved the way for large scale demonstration of advanced low-cost integrated technologies for 2,3 Butane Diol production, at Technology Readiness Scale 7 (moved from TERI initial leads at TRL 4).
Vision:
To create a Biomanufacturing platform for validation of translational research for demonstration of advanced biochemical production technologies at pre-commercial scale (TRL 7).
Objectives and Scope
This center is open to undertaking collaborative research explorations for demonstration of fermentation derived biochemicals including;
- Specialty bio-chemicals,
- Bio-precursor molecules for industrial applications,
- Enzymes,
- Bio-organic acids,
- Biopolymers etc.
