TERI organized a two-week residential training program on “Energy Modelling and Macro-economic Impact Analysis” for officers of Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Royal Govt. of Bhutan from 14th to 25th September at TERI, IHC.
The training ‘s core focus was on basics of energy modelling, analysis of energy balance tables, detailed hands-on sessions in TERI’s MARKAL/ TIMES energy modelling tool.
The training was further designed to cover various aspects of energy transition including, integrated assessment modelling, and transition risk, global initiatives in energy transition and role of carbon markets, techno-economic analysis, overview of TERI residential model (TRES), methodologies for demand estimation, various ongoing initiatives in Bhutan, introduction to emissions inventorization and reporting
Bringing together leaders within and outside TERI, from transport, power, industry, air quality, hydrological modelling and macroeconomic modelling, the technical sessions captured perspectives across the full energy sector.
The training provided a practical framework for advancing sector specific development and transition pathways. TERI did not merely present a model; the trainers worked on adapting India’s complex energy model structure to suit Bhutan’s relatively simple and elegant economic and sectoral framework.
Crucially, the training equipped Bhutan’s energy-sector policymakers with practical strategies to diversify the country’s energy mix while upholding its long-term low-carbon commitments amid rising energy demand.
