Development of Flood Warning System for Guwahati & Jorhat Town

TERI in collaboration with the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), India; TERI School of Advanced Studies (TERI SAS) and the Norwegian Research Center (NORCE) have undertaken this study with support from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with an aim to enhance disaster preparedness of Guwahati and Jorhat cities in Assam. The study will focus on the potential impact of flooding and identification of flood prone areas in Guwahati and Jorhat cities. The key objectives would be to combine GIS with Hydrodynamic models to identify flood risk on experimental basis. Later, a calibrated model will be developed for flood forecast based on different rainfall return period, along with a web-based Graphical User Interface for decision-makers and flood forecast.
