The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has been playing a pivotal role in advancing sustainable agricultural solutions through nanotechnology-driven innovations aimed at improving nutrient use efficiency, reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers, and minimizing environmental impacts. TERI along with multiple industrial partners (Zuari FarmHub Limited, Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited and DCM Shriram Limited) developed biogenic nanofertilizers including Nano Urea, Nano DAP, Nano Phosphorous, and nano NPK which have been officially notified under the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO) by the Government of India for commercialization. Extensive biosafety and field evaluations demonstrated that these nanofertilizers are safe, environmentally sustainable, and capable of reducing conventional fertilizer use by 25–50 per cent while enhancing crop productivity by 8–22 per cent. Through continued research, innovation, and industry partnerships, TERI is contributing significantly toward climate-smart agriculture, reduced carbon footprints, and sustainable food production systems in India and globally.
