India’s premier environment-based examination invites schools and students to strengthen sustainability learning through action-oriented environmental education
New Delhi, August 03, 2026: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has extended the registration deadline for GREEN Olympiad 2026–27, India’s premier environment-based examination that promotes environmental literacy and sustainability awareness among school students. Registrations are now open till 10 August 2026 for schools and students across the country.
Organized by TERI’s Environment Education & Awareness (EEA) Division, the GREEN Olympiad is designed to build awareness and inspire action on critical themes such as sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, natural resources, circular economy, waste management, sustainable lifestyles and others.
The examination for the 2026–27 edition will be conducted on 8 October 2026 and 18 November 2026, providing schools with flexible participation options.
GREEN Olympiad is offered in six languages: Assamese, English, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi and Tamil, and it has emerged as one of India’s most significant and impactful environment education initiatives, engaging lakhs of students from schools across the country. The programme complements classroom learning by encouraging students to understand environmental challenges while developing practical, solution-oriented thinking aligned with India’s sustainability priorities.
Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, said, “For over two decades, GREEN Olympiad has inspired young learners to understand environmental challenges and become responsible stewards of our planet. As sustainability becomes central to India’s development journey, it is important that every student has the opportunity to build environmental awareness and translate knowledge into action. To enable greater participation from schools across the country, we have extended the registration deadline to 10 August. We encourage schools to make the most of this additional opportunity and complete their registrations before the new deadline.”
Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, Social Transformation & Strategic Alliance, TERI, highlighted, “At TERI, our work over the last five decades has been guided by the belief that sustainable development can only be achieved when knowledge is translated into action and individuals are empowered to make choices that benefit both people and the planet. Environmental education has therefore remained at the heart of our efforts, as it provides the foundation upon which future generations can build a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable society.”
Dr Livleen K Kahlon, Director, Environment Education & Awareness (EEA), TERI, added, “GREEN Olympiad adopts a ‘whole-school’ approach to environment education, benefiting not only students but also teachers, school leadership, families, and communities. The programme continues to evolve in line with emerging priorities such as climate education, green skills, Mission LiFE, and the National Education Policy 2020. Last year, the Olympiad reached over 580 districts and engaged more than 1.2 lakh students. With the registration deadline now extended to 10 August, we look forward to reaching even more schools and students this year and encourage institutions to take advantage of this opportunity.”
GREEN Olympiad is endorsed by the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, The initiative is also promoted by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and prominent national and state education boards, reflecting its growing role in strengthening environmental education across the country.
The Olympiad aligns with the principles of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by encouraging interdisciplinary, experiential, and action-oriented learning.
