Balancing Industry and Breath: Assessing Atmospheric Carrying Capacity in Karnataka
Sustainable industrial growth requires more than just economic investment; it demands a scientific understanding of the environment’s 'carrying capacity.' In dense industrial clusters, where factories, power plants, and transport networks converge, air quality often reaches a breaking point.
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is spearheading an initiative to promote Farmers Producer Organisations (FPOs) among beekeepers and tribal farmers in Goa. Recognizing that pollination is a vital ecosystem service, this project aims to leverage apiculture to enhance food security, improve local livelihoods, and preserve the biodiversity of the region.
In February 2026, TERI successfully delivered a six-day residential Capacity Building and Training Programme for officials and frontline staff of the Mangrove Cell, Palghar Forest Department, demonstrating TERI's end-to-end capability from programme design to field implementation. The training aimed to assist professionals from the Mangrove Foundation in mastering mangrove ecosystem carbon inventory methods to assess the contribution of these ecosystems to atmospheric carbon sequestration.
The Mission LiFE Youth Ambassadors Programme is a collaborative initiative led by UNDP in partnership with TERI, designed to position young leaders and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) at the forefront of India’s sustainability transition.
Post-Green Revolution Challenges
Fifty years after the Green Revolution, India is navigating "second-generation" agricultural challenges. Intensive, inorganic chemical-based farming has led to a decline in crop productivity, deteriorating soil health, and a loss of soil organic carbon. These systems have further resulted in ground and surface water pollution, increased pest incidence, and heightened water stress.
The Hon'ble High Court of Madras, through its order dated 10.01.2025 in WP Nos. 27356 and 28266 of 2022 and WMP Nos. 13292, 13294, 35572, and 3700 of 2024 have directed the concerned authorities to take prompt and decisive action regarding environmental violations. The Court has specifically mandated that fines be levied not with leniency, but through robust control measures based on a scientific assessment of environmental loss and damage.
Beginning in November 2025, TERI has been assigned to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of works, including previous maintenance executed under the Haryana CAMPA in the years 2018–2023.
The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Energy and Development (MGIRED) is a Karnataka government-supported institution focused on rural energy, sustainability, and natural resource management through training, research, and advisory services. It conducts capacity-building programs for diverse stakeholders, including local representatives, self-help groups (SHGs), youth, and government officials, with the aim of enhancing awareness and skill development. However, the absence of a structured follow-up system has limited insights into training outcomes.
The Green School project 2.0 is a pioneering collaboration between the Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) and TERI. This initiative aims to foster critical thinking, interdisciplinary learnings, and a profound understanding of environment conservation values amongst the students studying in schools operating in Tata Steel operational areas.
Towards Sustainable, Equitable, and Resilient Blue Growth
The Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water emphasizes the conservation and sustainable use of ocean and marine resources. Its targets include preventing overexploitation of fish stocks, conserving coastal and marine ecosystems, eliminating harmful fishing subsidies, and ensuring equitable access for small-scale fishers. Collectively, these objectives aim to promote sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation, and inclusive governance to safeguard ocean health and enhance coastal livelihoods.
