Trade barriers and climate adaptation take centre stage in India’s Post-COP30 dialogue

Mr Prasoon Singh, Fellow, Earth Science and Climate Change Division, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), stated that the magnitude is comparable to the 2021 Tapovan–Vishnuprayag disaster. To determine the entire volume of the deposit, a comprehensive assessment of hydromorphology before and after the event would be required, he stated. Complete eradication, he stated, is virtually unattainable.

Despite dramatic gains in renewable energy, India dropped 13 places to 23rd in the Climate Change Performance Index released during COP30 in Brazil in November 2025. The main reason is the lack of progress to phase out coal. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has suggested that India could phase out coal power entirely by 2050 to meet its net zero goals.
