Mangrove ecosystems in Goa

Activities: Field studies in Goa’s mangrove ecosystems; Identification of wild mangrove fruit species; Collection and laboratory testing of fruit samples and associated tidal water samples; display of locally developed, tested, and marketed food products in Goa from an ongoing project.

TERI received special acknowledgment from Govt of Goa for its contributions and participation in a designated stall at the International Stakeholder Engagement Event and Workshop on “Decentralising Net Zero through Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Enhancement,” co-organised by IIM Ahmedabad, IDDRI Paris, and BITS Pilani under the aegis of the Government of Goa, held on 21 November 2025 at the Taj in Dona Paula. Title of presentation on "Assessment of Nutritional Properties of Wild Mangrove Fruits in India"

Mangrove survey for macroalgae research

This research project is aimed at isolating and idelanntifying microalgae strains from mangrove ecosystems that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and carotenoids. The study will investigate the underlying biological mechanisms of these strains and evaluate their potential applications in the food and feed industries.

Mangrove and Aquaculture

Current mudcrab-shrimp farming lacks a well-defined, implementable model with clear technical specifications, risk assessment, and sustainability safeguards. Innovation is needed to develop replicable silvoaquaculture models adaptable to other coastal states. Integrated Mangrove-Crustacean Aquaculture (IMCA) approach proposes linking mangrove restoration and conservation with sustainable aquaculture systems to simultaneously address production bottlenecks and enhance ecosystem resilience and carbon storage.
