74 million rural households in India do not have access to electricity. Many of them do not even stand a chance in the near future due to their remote location. In many cases, even where grid power is available, supply is invariably dismal. How can such backward regions be electrified? Can solar energy be a technically viable, reliable and affordable solution for such regions? ‘Following the light’ brings forward some answers from the Sunderbans islands of West Bengal.
