Training Series under Design to Sustain Programme - Session I: Fenestration Design & Shading Devices

TERI-WRC, in collaboration with Saint Gobain, organized a one-day training session on 'Fenestration Design & Shading Devices' as a part of 'Training Series under Design to Sustain Program' on July 27, 2016 at The Park Hotel, Navi Mumbai. The event began with an opening session by Ar Aditi Phansalkar, Research Associate and Area Convenor, TERI WRC wherein she presented an overview of TERI and specific activities of TERI WRC. While presenting the current urbanization scenarios and practices, she also elaborated on the key role played by architects in the process of urbanization.

Ar. Namrata Kaur Mahal, Fellow, TERI and Program Associate, GRIHA Council, explained the fundamentals of climate responsive fenestration design which included understanding of key concepts such as horizontal and vertical shadow angle, Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient (SHGC) and its in-depth calculations. Additionally, she also conducted a hands-on session to enable the participants to design a fenestration in a given climatic zone, complying with the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC 2007).

The training series also included a session on Sustainability and Well-being by Er Suchi Verma, Design Engineer, Saint Gobain, in which she introduced various latest and innovative solutions in a glass and in general. The day was concluded with a software training session conducted by Ar. Rahul Shrikhande, in which he demonstrated various software tools to undertake the shadow analysis. A total of 40 people participated in the event from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune.
