GREEN Olympiad: Nurturing Environmental Stewardship since 25 Years
India currently has 253 million students enrolled in schools and 34 million youth pursuing higher education. By 2030, these students will add up to the existing ‘young’ population and will be the key decision-makers in all walks of life. Hence it is of utmost importance that their behaviors are shaped in a manner that they promote sustainable choices in decision making. TERI believes that the time to influence their attitudes is when they are in their learning phase and can understand, experiment and act on concepts of sustainable choices. Government of India is initiating new and novel schemes to benefit our young citizens and education based reforms are making a strong comeback. TERI remains ahead of time when it comes to design and implementation of sustainability driven solutions. But it is clearly evident that this perfection needs to percolate to every section of society so that our future workforce is made aware of contemporary environment issues and is also trained with skills that will enhance their employability. Against this background, GREEN Olympiad (GO) was initiated in 1999 and since then our vision is to test the environment quotient of students thereby giving them avenues to prepare themselves as environment literate individuals. The importance of Olympiads is also articulated in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the program draws its linkages to SDG 4.7 on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
GO 2023 received endorsements from Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change and Ministry of Education, Government of India. This was followed by an outreach support from State Nodal Agencies (SNAs) for Eco Clubs, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathanan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Sangathan (NVS) and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Goa. As we celebrate our milestones and announce 25 years of GREEN Olympiad, we cherish our relationships with our valued partners 'our students'. A Felicitation Ceremony is scheduled on February 01, 2024 from 10.00 – 13.00 Hrs to acknowledge their participation and celebrate their performance in this academic year.
