Center of Excellence for Energy Efficient Buildings in India - A Public Event to Share Experiences and Learning to Date

In order to address the challenge of rapid urbanization, Government of India has launched the Smart City Program. Under the program, Government of India has allocated USD 1.2 billion in fiscal year 2014-15 to building 100 new smart cities. Various aspects of smartness which shall be covered in the program are Smart Governance, Smart Energy, Smart Environment, Smart Transportation, Smart IT and Communications and Smart Buildings.

Keeping in mind the energy consumption in commercial building sector and Smart Cities Program , "TERI-UTC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for energy efficient existing buildings in India" has been set up by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and United Technologies Corporation (UTC) to facilitate energy savings in existing buildings. The CoE has been set up to understand the current energy consumption trends in existing buildings, identify opportunities for saving energy and to identify and bridge gaps (technical and financial) in implementation of energy saving solutions. In order to meet the objectives of the CoE, energy survey at 100 existing buildings (50 offices, 25 hotels and 25 hospitals) shall be carried out by TERI.

The main objectives of setting up Centre of Excellence include:

• Development of energy use reporting framework for the existing building sector
• Evaluation of the existing building energy rating systems
• Derivation of tool and techniques for energy management, real time reporting of energy consumption, and identification and cost benefit analysis of energy conservation measures
• Development of Measurement and Verification (M&V) protocol for establishing the energy saving potential of various energy conservation measures
• Formulation of design and retrofit guidelines that could be suggested as an addendum to relevant codes and standards
• Development of supportive standards and regulation that will enable market uptake of energy efficient technologies.

The objectives of the CoE shall be achieved by conducting study at 100 buildings in India located across major cities like (Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur, Allahabad, Ajmer and Vishakhapatnam etc.). The cities selected shall be as per the cities planned under Smart City Program launched by Government of India.Till now energy surveys at fifteen buildings have been completed.In order to share the outcomes of the first year activities carried out by CoE, a conference "First year outcomes of TERI-UTC Centre of excellence on energy efficient buildings in India" will take place on 9th October 2015 at the Juniper Hall, India Habitat centre, New Delhi, India.
