In order to address the challenge of rapid urbanization, Government of India has launched the Smart City Program. Under the program, Government of India has allocated USD 1.2 billion in fiscal year 2014-15 to building 100 new smart cities. Various aspects of smartness which shall be covered in the program are Smart Governance, Smart Energy, Smart Environment, Smart Transportation, Smart IT and Communications and Smart Buildings.
Keeping in mind the energy consumption in commercial building sector and Smart Cities Program , "TERI-UTC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for energy efficient existing buildings in India" has been set up by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and United Technologies Corporation (UTC) to facilitate energy savings in existing buildings. The CoE has been set up to understand the current energy consumption trends in existing buildings, identify opportunities for saving energy and to identify and bridge gaps (technical and financial) in implementation of energy saving solutions. In order to meet the objectives of the CoE, energy survey at 100 existing buildings (50 offices, 25 hotels and 25 hospitals) shall be carried out by TERI.
