Air pollution in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) remains a critical challenge to public health and environmental sustainability. With particulate matter (PM) levels often exceeding national standards by up to four times, there is an urgent need for precise, actionable data. This multi-institutional collaboration, involving ARAI, TERI, IITM-Pune, and IIT-Delhi, is structured to be executed over a total duration of 71 months (consisting of a 20-month baseline phase, a 15-month profile development phase, and a 36-month periodic update phase), ultimately serving as a scalable framework for India's National Clean Air Programme (NCAP).
This project develops a validated, high-resolution (0.5 x 0.5 sq. km) dynamic emissions inventory for all 25 districts of the Delhi-NCR to combat the region's severe air pollution challenges. By establishing new, region-specific emission factors and particulate matter source profiles for critical sectors like transport, biomass burning, and construction, the initiative provides a rigorous scientific foundation for policy interventions. The project integrates advanced chemical transport modeling with a GIS-enabled digital platform to enhance the accuracy of air quality forecasting and track annual emission trends. The project encompasses chemical transport modeling, 2030-2040 future scenario analysis (BaU/AMB), and a query-based geospatial database
