The scope of this ongoing project focuses on conducting the First Spring Census of potential springs across Manipur in accordance with the national spring census guidelines. The work involves systematic identification, geo-tagging, and documentation of springs to establish a baseline inventory capturing their spatial distribution, typology, discharge characteristics, seasonal variability, and usage patterns.
Primary data collection is being carried out through field surveys using standardized formats and mobile-based applications to ensure accuracy and consistency. Community interactions with village authorities are being undertaken to document traditional practices, governance aspects, and observed changes in spring conditions.
The scope also includes the assessment of hydrogeological, environmental, and climatic factors influencing spring sustainability. Based on multiple criteria and indicators, unsustainable springs are being identified, and preliminary mitigation measures are being examined. In addition, the study assesses the potential of selected springs for spring-based developmental projects, including drinking water and livelihood support, considering technical, environmental, and institutional feasibility. The ongoing work eventually supports the development of a comprehensive spring database for springshed management and state-level planning.
