Forest and Climate Change: Opportunities and Challenges of Adaptation and Mitigation

The intent of the programme is to help states evaluate the quality of forests and accordingly, determine the future course of action for improvement of forest cover, and thereby contribute to achieving our nationally determined contributions (NDCs). The course will also be helpful in upgrading our forest working plans in order to align these with the new sectoral goals.
In India over 300 million people are directly or indirectly dependent on forests for their sustenance and livelihoods. Forests provide a unique opportunity to promote economic security, ecological security, food security, water security, energy security and in the whole process help to achieve sustainable development of the country. The current national forest policy enunciated in 1988 embodies all elements of sustainable forest management, a concept to which India is firmly committed. The policy places highest priority to the ecological and environmental stability, together with meeting the livelihood concerns of the people living in and around forests. Under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, the Ministry of Environment and Forest has taken up the Green India Mission which targets treatment of 10 million hectares of degraded landscape through various measures of afforestation and conservation. Further, India needs to sequester an additional 2.5 to 3 billion tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2030 under NDC target.
With the above context, TERI organising a five-day online refresher training course for Forest Service officers nominated by MoEFCC on the theme "Forest and Climate Change: Opportunities and Challenges of Adaptation and Mitigation" The workshop will discuss the theory and concepts of various issues and opportunities related to climate change.
