TERI - Uni Research Climate Research School on Extremes
The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in collaboration with the Uni Research, Norway, under the Phase 2 of the Norwegian Framework Agreement between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and TERI organized the first Climate Research School on Extremes from September 18-22, 2017.
The programme was designed for advanced Masters level students, PhD graduates, and early career scientists, in the field of atmospheric & ocean sciences and modelling to provide them an understanding on the dynamicity and predictability of extremes events along with laboratory work on analysis of climate datasets specific to extremes.
Dr M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, and H E Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg, Ambassador, The Royal Norwegian Embassy, in their respective Inaugural and Special Address highlighted the growing concern of increasing climate extremes and lauded the research collaboration between India and Norway that aims to create modelling tools and products to assist policy makers in their planning and also congratulated TERI on organizing comprehensive capacity building residential workshops. Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, TERI, emphasized the importance of developing climate services for the society and for the decision makers. Dr Trond Dokken, Research Director, Uni Research, recommended the need of continuing collaboration between India and Norway on climate research for reducing uncertainty and developing policy relevant scientific products. Dr Leena Srivastava, Vice Chancellor, TERI University, focussed on the importance of interlinkages and proper communication of the climate information.
CRS 2017 hosted around 35 participants from 20 national and international universities and institutes. Faculty from Uni Research - Norway, Columbia University/NOAA-US, INPE-Brazil, University of Reading-UK, IITM-Pune, IMD-Pune, NCMRWF-Noida, IIT-Delhi and TERI delivered lectures and took training course work at the research school.
