National Workshop on 'Achieving Resource Efficiency in Automobile Value Chain in India'
The auto component industry forms the backbone of India's automobile sector and economic viability depends a lot on availability of adequate materials at affordable prices. Meeting future demand for automobiles will require substantial materials. Estimates from the GIZ-TERI (2016) analysis reveals that material demand for the automotive sector over the next decade will increase from 14 million tonnes to more than 100 million tonnes. Further, absence of robust national policies on retirement and treatment of end-of-life vehicles, will pose serious sustainability threat to the sector.
In this regard, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is organizing a National Workshop on 'Achieving Resource Efficiency in Automobile Value Chain in India', on 28 June, 2017 at India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. This workshop is being organized as a part of TERI's ongoing project titled, 'Resource Efficiency Initiative India: A case study of the automotive sector', supported by Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) with GIZ as the lead implementing partner.
The objective of the workshop is to
- learn resource efficiency related opportunities and achievements under the ongoing project in India's auto component manufacturing companies and
- understand current ELV management practices in India and how sustainable management of the end of life vehicles can be achieved through sound policies, good practices and designing business models.
