National Training Series on Green Shipping and PtX Technologies
To bridge the gap between India's ambitious green energy targets and maritime operations, a specialized capacity-building training series was launched. Driven by the National Centre of Excellence in Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS)—hosted by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)—this initiative supports the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in defossilizing India's maritime sector.
Core Objectives & Structure
The training series was designed to build a foundational understanding of international regulations, supply chain development, and the techno-economic and ecological implications of alternative fuels.
Structured as a four-part rolling program across different strategic locations in India, each workshop brings together stakeholders from both the renewable energy and maritime sectors. While maintaining a cohesive foundational curriculum, each batch is customized to address the unique logistical and industrial priorities of its specific hosting region.
Key Curricular Pillars
Every workshop in the series revolves around five interconnected thematic areas:
- Technology & Innovation: Showcasing cutting-edge advancements in Power-to-X (PtX) fuel production and assessing their scalability for the shipping industry.
- Techno-Economic & Environmental Analysis: Evaluating the economic viability, lifecycle benefits, and operational challenges of alternative maritime fuels.
- Policy & Regulatory Landscape: Navigating evolving global standards, including emission mandates and supportive international policy frameworks.
- Fuel Supply & Port Integration: Designing robust distribution networks and optimizing fuel production processes directly within port ecosystems.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Exploring cross-sector models to accelerate decarbonization, with a heavy focus on developing Green Shipping Corridors.
Strategic Context Fueling the Workshops
The training series serves as a direct operational response to several major national and international mandates:
- National Green Hydrogen Mission (2023): Aiming for 5 million tons of green hydrogen capacity by 2030, with shipping explicitly prioritized for decarbonization.
- Maritime India Vision 2030: A framework by MoPSW emphasizing the transition to clean, electricity-based shipping fuels across India’s 7,500 km coastline, 13 major ports, and over 200 non-major ports.
- IMO Net-Zero Target: India’s commitment to the International Maritime Organization’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions in international shipping operations by or around 2050.
Workshop Rollout & Progress
The series has successfully rolled out three distinct batches, progress detail outlined below:
Batch 1: Technological Foundations & Frameworks
Inaugurated as an official high-level side event, this batch brought together domestic and international institutions to evaluate the real-world integration of hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol into shipping lines.
- Key Leadership & Trainers: Featured insights from Shri Abhay Bakre (National Green Hydrogen Mission), Tobias Winter (Indo-German Energy Forum), and Prakriti Sethi (Methanol Institute).
- Core Focus: Technical training modules led by expert trainers Heino von Meyer, Dr. Piyali Das, and Mr. Souvik Bhattacharjya focused heavily on port-based production strategies.
Batch 2 (Gurgaon): Alternative Fuel Implementation
Hosted at TERI Gram in Gurgaon, this edition shifted focus toward the urgent timeline of renewable energy integration. Dr Vibha Dhawan (Director General, TERI) opened the session by emphasizing immediate sector accountability.
- Key Leadership & Trainers: Featured technical segments from the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.
- Core Focus: High-level policy and climate impact sessions were driven by Mr R R Rashmi (Distinguished Fellow, TERI) and Mr Deepak Rai (Secretariat, National Green Hydrogen Mission, MNRE).
Batch 3 (Mumbai): Port Readiness & Execution
Centered in India's maritime hub, the Mumbai workshop focused heavily on infrastructure execution and working backward from global deadlines.
- Key Leadership & Trainers: Shri Shyam Jagannathan (DG Shipping) delivered a critical directive on aligning immediate actions with the IMO 2050 targets.
- Core Focus: Dr Piyali Das led specialized training on "Alternative Fuel Mix Options for India and Port Readiness Level," translating the recent outcomes of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 83) into practical strategies for Indian port infrastructure.
