About Coastal Studies and Resource Management (CoE-CSRM)
The proposed TERI-Centre of Excellence for Coastal Studies and Resource Management focuses on discovering the links between land and water ecosystems in the coastal zone. The Centre operates at the interface of science-policy and science-practice, providing technical, advisory, and outreach services for the sustainable management of coastal, marine, and inland resources. Researchers investigate science-based questions focusing on the preservation of delicate coastal resources while considering climate change, water pollution, mining practices, agricultural runoff, and insufficient scientific understanding.
The world’s coastal zones are home to more than 70 percent of the global population and experience intense economic activity. The rate of environmental change is accelerating at an alarming rate. Therefore, CSRM research is urgent.
Geographically, the Centre is ideally situated for conducting coastal studies, as it lies along the Arabian Sea coastline in Goa, featuring a wide range of habitats and resources like Mangroves, Estuaries, Khazans, and Fisheries. Concerning the provision of training, TERI has set up the Coastal Educational Hub, highlighting our invaluable coastal ecosystems and resources for student education, entrepreneurship training and development, women's empowerment, and raising public awareness. The Centre intimately connects various UN SDG Goals with a thorough capacity building.
Objectives & Scope of Work
CoE-CSRM is committed to the mission as follows:
- Peer-scientific research in the relevant areas of coastal ecology, blue carbon, benthic and pelagic biodiversity, marine pollution, fisheries and aquaculture.
- Assessment, framework and recommendation for resource-efficient management practices to sustainably protect marine and coastal ecosystems.
- Hands-on training in aquaculture practices, seawater analysis, biomass inventory, carbon and GHG monitoring, testing of marine edible products.
- Inland water treatment technology to provide affordable and clean water supply solutions to the local community.
- Circular economy adoption for improved solid waste management and handling of material at mining dumps.
- Sustainable marine renewables and green shipping solutions to reduce carbon emission and environmental impact.
- Ecotourism and coastal education through implementation of educational tours, community-based conservation, and restoration initiatives.
- Promote citizen science to foster self-sustaining rural economy through organic farming, agriculture practices, and capacity building.
Mandate
TERI Centre of Excellence for Coastal Studies and Resource Management is mandated to provide best possible science and technology-driven services for the conservation and sustainable utilization of coastal, marine and adjacent inland resources through research, capacity building, and consulting efforts in close collaboration with both international and national partners. These activities are grounded in an impact-focused interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary method, developing operational excellence and combining natural and social sciences by monitoring-measurement based approach and awareness training program. The Centre aims to achieve various UN SDG Goals and contribute to Nation building through various flagship programs of Government of India, like the ‘National Coastal Scheme’, ‘Small Grant Programs in Indian Coastal Region’, ‘Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan’, ‘Swatch Bharat Mission’, ‘Self-Reliant India’ and others.
