Australia-India Knowledge Exchange Workshop on 'Smart Energy Management'

Rapid urbanization is one of the key drivers for the increasing energy demand and consumption. As cities face a series of complex and interconnected challenges related to rapid urbanization, climate change and energy management, there needs to be a better understanding for addressing these challenges. To this end, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia, have an existing collaboration on the thematic area of Sustainable Habitats and Cities, with a focus on energy management, energy efficiency and local climate action. As part of this collaboration, a workshop is being organized on March 29th, 2019, in UNSW Sydney. A policy brief on smart energy management for cities will be released at the workshop.

The knowledge exchange workshops are being organized to bring together various sector experts to address the urban challenges and discuss inputs to policies on smart energy management for Indian cities. The first knowledge exchange workshop on ‘Smart Energy Management for Sustainable Cities’ was organized on December 13th, 2018, at TERI, New Delhi. Taking forward the partnership and knowledge exchange, the workshop in Australia is a reciprocal visit to discuss cutting-edge technologies, innovative planning and design and emerging strategies that can enhance both financial and technical capacities of the cities.

With support from the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA), and industry partners Mahindra Group and DuPont India Pvt. Ltd., the collaboration will provide a platform for relevant stakeholders in India and Australia to discuss opportunities for future business and research collaboration, and deliberate on energy-efficient and low-carbon pathways to mitigate negative externalities of urbanization in Indian cities.
