Rapid urban growth in developing countries has created an unprecedented demand for energy services. Cities face the enormous challenge of improving energy access to urban poor in order to improve their socio-economic conditions. According to UN estimates, about 33% of the population in developing countries lives in slums. The population living in slums is expected to double by 2030 in these countries. The study proposes to undertake a demonstration programme to create bio resource base for provision of sustainable fuel supply which in turn can be utilised in energy efficient technologies and services. The creation of bio resource based would be designed to provide employment opportunities under NREGA. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, is preparing the National Report for the 18th Annual Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. The focus of the National Report will be on the following five thematic clusters (i) Transport; (ii) Chemicals; (iii) Waste Management; (iv) Mining; and (v) Ten Year Framework of Programme on Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns. Under the study titled above, TERI shall prepare three reports namely:1. Comparative study on global building benchmarks:TERI shall conduct research on building standards and norms for the industry in India and establish a comparison with global benchmarks (i.e. EU and USA). This study shall identify the gaps and establish potential areas for investment in research and development of various technologies and Indian specific standards, which will have a significant impact reduction in CO2 emissions.
