Purulia district in West Bengal is widely known for its socioeconomic backwardness, and a rural-based economy. Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood. In addition to livelihood challenges, the region faces multiple socio-economic issues such as poor school infrastructure, low learning outcomes, limited non-farm livelihood opportunities, inadequate access to clean and reliable energy, and insufficient healthcare services.
Addressing these concerns, TERI implemented a CSR project in Kashipur block of Purulia district, West Bengal. The project was supported by LIC HFL, named as HRIDAY (Holistic Rural Initiative for Development and Youth Advancement).
The project focussed on integrated village development, livelihood generation and strengthening community partnerships.
The project impacted thousands of beneficiaries both directly and indirectly through various livelihood and community focussed interventions. School Students were trained on WASH activities promoting a healthy and hygienic lifrstyle. Alternative livelihood interventions were introduced including duck farming and pisciculture that supported women in their income generation. To improve agriculture productivity solar water pumps were installed and climate resilient crops were introduced (including SRI technique) to farmers. Various self-help groups were trained improving coordination and promoting partnership among community.
