A School Education and Engagement Initiative on Energy Conservation and Efficiency

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in partnership with BSES Yamuna Power Ltd. (BYPL), envisioned EN- Powered Schools with the overall objective of helping school students understand the grim situation of the energy sector and establish a coexistence between the demand and supply curves. The initiative adopts a curriculum-linked and experiential learning approach to introduce concepts of energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, electrical safety, and sustainable lifestyles to primary school students. By strengthening classroom learning and promoting action within schools and homes, the programme aims to create a cadre of informed citizens capable of contributing to India's clean energy transition.

Phase I (2024–25): Building the Foundation

Phase I introduced energy education to 100 MCD primary schools through curriculum-linked, age-appropriate learning resources and interactive activities. Student workbooks, teacher resources, posters, activity sheets, storytelling sessions, films, and workshops helped build awareness of energy conservation, efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable lifestyles. This phase engaged 18,193 students and 644 teachers directly within the targeted schools on energy conservation and energy efficiency.

Phase II (2025–26): Strengthening Teacher Leadership

Building on the success of Phase I, Phase II shifted its focus towards strengthening teacher capacity and promoting experiential learning across 70 MCD schools. The programme introduced the teacher resource publication Rooms, Roads, and Renewables: Case Studies for the Classroom, along with teacher training, school energy quizzes, exposure visits, and school action projects. By positioning teachers as change-makers, the programme deepened student engagement and reached approximately 18,302 students and 289 teachers.

Phase III (2026–27): Creating Lasting Impact

Phase III focuses on institutionalising energy conservation within schools through teacher-led EN-Powered Clubs and student ambassadors across 70 MCD primary schools. Through Training of Trainers (ToT), experiential learning tools, club activities, and school-wide campaigns, the programme aims to embed energy conservation into everyday school practices, ensuring long-term behavioural change and sustained ownership by schools.
