As part of the ongoing Gorakhpur Carbon Finance Project, TERI—with support from the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department—conducted structured training and capacity-building programmes in the Gorakhpur district on 9 June and 13 June 2024. These initiatives were designed to strengthen the capacity of local farmers and stakeholders, ensuring inclusive participation, transparency, and effective project implementation.
The programme focused on enhancing stakeholder proficiency in monitoring activities, including biomass assessment, carbon stock measurement, and sustainable land management. Participants received a blend of theoretical orientation and practical field-based training, covering systematic sampling design, plot demarcation, tree measurement, and biomass estimation techniques.
These interventions significantly improved stakeholders’ understanding of their roles in afforestation and highlighted the critical importance of trees in carbon sequestration. Furthermore, participants were briefed on how quantified carbon storage will be used to generate carbon credits, creating a vital secondary income stream for participating farmers. By emphasizing these climate and economic co-benefits, the training successfully reinforced the project’s dual mission: enhancing environmental carbon storage while improving local livelihoods.
