Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture 2020
The annual lecture series was initiated by TERI in 2002 to commemorate the legacy of TERI's visionary founder and noted technocrat-industrialist, Darbari S Seth.
On 28th August 2020, His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations delivered the 19th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture titled "The Rise of Renewables: Shining a Light on A Sustainable Future". Dr S Jaishankar, Union Minister for External Affairs, presided to deliver the Presidential Address on "Towards Reformed Multilateralism" at the DSML 2020.

The Union Minister said India needs to be more self-generating and self-sustaining. He said during this phase of the global pandemic, India will create opportunities by giving primacy to employment generation, innovation and digitization. Reiterating PM Modi's recent message, he said the government not only seeks to Make in India, but to do so, making for the world.
The Minister urged for the need to revisit the concept of globalization and called for a new, inclusive and non-transactional approach to multilateralism.

In his video message, HE Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN said India has all the ingredients for exerting leadership at home and abroad, as envisioned by Mr Darbari Seth. He added that the drivers are poverty alleviation and universal energy access – two of India's top priorities.
On global leadership on clean energy and climate action, the UN Secretary-General said, "I will continue to urge all countries, especially the G20 countries, to commit to carbon neutrality before 2050 and to submit, well before COP26, more ambitious nationally determined contributions and long-term strategies that are aligned with the 1.5-degree goal."
The UN Secretary-General also listed six "climate-positive actions" that he has suggested to governments to recover better from the pandemic.

Nitin Desai, Chairman, and Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, TERI started off the proceedings of the 19th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture by speaking on what TERI stands for in these challenging times.
Mr Desai said that TERI focuses on analyses and policies that move the country and the world towards sustainable development, whether on climate change or on resource efficiency, or in many other areas. But at the same time, TERI also focuses on actual science and technology development.
Dr Mathur reiterated TERI's commitment toward the efficient use of resources and to find sustainable solutions in our development journey.

Dr Ajay Mathur recognised colleagues who, in 2019-20, completed twenty years of service, as well as those who have been recognised for their innovative work last year, through their addition to the TERI Roll of Honour.
