Mushroom and Azolla Cultivation Training for Empowering Marginalized Tribal Communities in Mokhada
To address the persistent malnutrition and livelihood challenges in the ST communities of Mokhada, two training sessions on Oyster Mushroom and Azolla cultivation were organized as part of the DST-funded project "Innovative Interventions in Mokhada Block of Palghar District to Combat Malnutrition and Enhance Livelihoods of ST Communities." Held on March 3rd and 4th, 2025, at Burangewadi and Pawarpada respectively, the workshops were led by Mr. Manish Asodekar and Dr. Ninad Marathe, engaging 42 tribal women in hands-on learning. The training aimed to tackle the lack of access to nutritious food in the region. Azolla, a fast-growing aquatic fern, offers a sustainable and nutrient-rich solution, enhancing nutrition in the livestock feed, while mushrooms, packed with proteins, vitamins, and minerals, serve as another valuable dietary supplement. By promoting the cultivation of these crops, the project seeks to improve nutrition and create livelihood opportunities for the community. The initiative also empowers participants to share their knowledge with their community, encouraging sustainable farming practices and contributing to long-term economic stability for the ST communities of Mokhada.
Development of Nursery at STI Hub Site, Mokhada

This process ensured proper drainage and a uniform soil structure, promoting healthy plant development and improving irrigation efficiency. These efforts will support cultivating plants like citronella, palmarosa, and patchouli, benefiting the ST communities of Mokhada. Additionally, 4 nursery beds of 10m x 2 m dimensions for the cultivation of aromatic plants and 1 bed of 2m x 1m dimensions were prepared for Azolla cultivation were prepared.
