It is widely recognized that buildings are responsible for more than one-third of total energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions globally. The building sector can contribute to mitigating impacts of climate change by delivering significant greenhouse gas emission reductions; and energy, resource, and cost savings through action oriented policy initiatives.
This conclave attempts to bring together important stakeholders from national and international arenas to a common platform, facilitating interaction and dialogue on green building initiatives for existing buildings and policy frameworks to facilitate better understanding and usher in partnerships that will benefit not only the United Arab Emirates (UAE), but the whole region.
Through moderated panel discussions, sessions at the forum shall provide an opportunity to exchange information on the ongoing initiatives, share good practices from India and the UAE and provide a platform to identify a future roadmap in this direction.
Session 1: Energy Cheque: Transforming the existing for future
In association with Ramboll
In addition to energy-efficient new construction, existing building stock also has a vast potential of reducing carbon emissions. Retrofitting and energy management in existing buildings are fast and financially feasible strategies towards reducing emissions from the building sector.
Through a moderated panel discussion, Energy Cheque: Transforming the existing for future shall highlight and seek views on enhancement of existing initiatives towards lowering emissions from the existing building stock.
As a logical outcome, TERI, Ramboll and CERT shall identify future research opportunities and mobilize local resources to analyse the existing building stock in the UAE so as to minimize the detrimental impacts on the environment.
Session 2: Climate change and built environment: an Indian perspective
In association with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India
This session will showcase Indian initiatives to combat climate change and highlight the actions taken by the country at a national level. India¿s commitment towards integrating sustainability in the built environment and providing an impetus to renewable energy integration is reflected through the release of its National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
The NAPCC, released by the Prime Minister¿s Council on Climate Change, serves as the first countrywide framework on climate change with the approval and support of the Government of India. The eight NAPCC missions map out long-term and integrated strategies to achieve key national goals from the climate change perspective and identify measures that promote the development objective of the country while producing co-benefits that address climate change effectively.
The discussions at the session shall highlight India¿s initiatives towards reducing the detrimental environmental impacts from the built environment, including the Solar Mission and the Mission on Sustainable Habitats of the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
