Action Plan for Green Budget for Punjab

Punjab was the first state in India to undertake an exercise on green budgeting

Green budgeting is defined as a mechanism of systematically examining, identifying and mapping the existing fiscal and economic policy measures into the budgeting processes along with their contribution to environmental (green) targets and sustainable development. Punjab was the first state in India to undertake an exercise on green budgeting; this research and policy dialogue exercise involved conceptualising green budgeting and designing an action plan for green budgeting. The project was funded by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, Government of Punjab and implemented by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST).

The project strengthened inter-departmental understanding on the concept of environmental sustainability and planning for improved responses to environmental issues through dialogue and sensitisation. It also led to conceptualisation of green budgeting for enhanced policy coherence through research and policy dialogue for meeting national and international commitments on sustainable development, environment and climate change.
