The Land Resource Division of TERI has been actively involved in the rehabilitation/remediation of mined-out areas as well as the dissemination of rehabilitation technology through the implementation of pilot projects and training and capacity building.
The Watershed Development Department (WDD) of Karnataka is implementing the REWARD project with financial assistance from the World Bank. Currently being piloted in the states of Karnataka and Odisha, the project focuses on promoting climate-smart agriculture to bolster rural resilience. Initiated in 2021–22 and slated to continue through 2026–27, the initiative provides comprehensive solutions to farmers through scientific watershed development, encompassing production, processing, post-harvest management, and marketing.
The project is an ARR-based agroforestry carbon finance initiative implemented across six districts of Gujarat to enhance tree cover, improve farm productivity, and support rural livelihoods. Given the state’s relatively low forest cover, the project promotes the integration of commercially viable tree species into existing agricultural and barren lands. Led by Shri Hari Bhujal Vikas Mandal (SHBVM), the initiative supports farmers through quality planting material and technical assistance, while enabling additional income through carbon credit generation.
From Waste to Wilderness: Restoring India’s Red Mud LandscapesBackground: The Environmental Challenge of Mining
Mining is a cornerstone of India’s infrastructure and economic growth, yet it leaves behind a significant environmental footprint. Beyond land degradation, mine overburden and waste are prone to erosion, often choking natural drainage systems and producing acidic runoff. The cascading effects—ranging from biodiversity loss and water depletion to air and soil pollution—impact both livestock and human health.
Designed to enhance rural livelihoods while generating measurable climate benefits through agroforestry-based tree plantation, this initiative, focused on the Gorakhpur Forest Circle in Uttar Pradesh, leverages a robust collaborative framework with the state’s Forest Department to drive farmer mobilization and data collection.
The objective of this project is to develop green cover, in order to reduce mud erosion and windblown dust during the summer season. The specific objectives are to: 1. Ensure that the green belt restoration, helps in filtering out the rainwater, thereby improving the water quality (pH neutral).
Developing green cover at the red mud and convert the red mud deposits, which is inhospitable for plants, to a substrate which will allow them to grow and develop by improving its physical and physico-chemical conditions, and removing the inhibiting substances by means of low-cost additives and treatments. The specific objectives of the assignment will include: (1) Formulate and develop closer plan report on mine rehabilitation of 100 acres of area.
Around 147 million hectares in India is undergoing some form of degradation. India needs sustainable management of land, forest, and water.
The REWARD project by the Watershed Development Department of Karnataka, supported by the World Bank, promotes climate-smart agriculture through scientific watershed development. Launched in 2021–22 and running until 2026–27, it covers 20 lakh hectares across 21 districts, with focused interventions on 1 lakh hectares. The project integrates production, processing, post-harvest management, and marketing while supporting landless individuals and women.
NEDO is implementing a smart community pilot project in selected sub-stations of Panipat. TERI provided support to the members of consortium and NEDO for undertaking the pre-feasibility study and feasibility study. In continuation to this, TERI proposes to assist NEDO for implementing smart community pilot project in Panipat. The scope of work would include the following: Understanding the regulatory environment for smart community project: Customization of smart community equipment as per the local environment;
