Launch of COP26 Charter of Actions and discussion on "Beyond Climate Neutrality: Using LTS to Chart an Equitable Path for a Resilient Planet"

Long-term strategies (LTS) and equity considerations are crucial to raise ambition in short-term climate policy, finance and to reach climate stabilization. We discuss their role in sustainability governance, core topics such as energy & transport, ecosystem stewardship, CO2 removal and adaptation.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and TERI School of Advanced Studies, in collaboration with German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), WiseEuropa -The Warsaw Institute for Economic and European Studies Foundation (WiseEuropa), and Ecologic Institute is organizing a UNFCCC official side event, titled, "Beyond Climate Neutrality: Using LTS to Chart an Equitable Path for a Resilient Planet", on 6th November 2021, 10:15-11:30 PM IST (4:45-6:00 PM GMT).

This event is being organized as a part of activities under the COP26 Charter of Actions, which is a knowledge document being prepared by TERI. The Charter will be launched officially at the side event in Glasgow.

The Charter will examine the themes of equity, green finance, nature-based solutions, adaptation & resilience, energy, clean transport, and business actions. The Charter activities are supported by the British High Commission, Bloomberg Philanthropies, Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation and Tata Cleantech Capital, and held under the aegis of TERI's flagship track-II initiative, the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS).

Issues emanating from the COP26 discussions and the Charter would culminate in a review at a plenary session at the WSDS 2022, which would assess the efforts of international climate negotiations in securing a sustainable future, and deliberate on future actions.

The objective of the event is to support a decision at the COP26 on LTS: the formulation and review of national LTS, geared towards adaptation and global climate stabilization and consistent with the sustainability agenda and other LTS, should become a perpetual process. The event will also showcase research initiatives by the organizers. From TERI, this event will see the launch of the COP26 Charter of Actions.

Key questions for the discussions include:

• Which are key elements of a COP26 decision on LTS, to harness their potential in guiding ambitious national climate policies and international cooperation towards adaptation and climate stabilization?
• Which topics should be covered and which priorities be set in new and strengthened LTS?
• What is important in processes to develop LTS, to link them to NDCs and other instruments, and to develop a globally consistent picture?
• Which barriers do countries face in developing LTS, and how can they be overcome?
