To promote the country's electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in line with its vision of Viksit Bharat, the Centre is in the process of establishing a task force to create a roadmap for the industry, according to a letter sent by the ministry of heavy industries (MHI) to automakers. Mr I.V. Rao, Distinguished Fellow at TERI, one of the agencies in the task force, confirmed the ministry's move.

As of 2024, TERI is into its 50th year of research on sustainability issues impacting the unserved population through applied research innovations and solutions. Dr Suneel Pandey is working with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) as Director of Circular Economy and Waste
Read moreThe third phase of corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE-III norms, is being prepared by the road transport and highways ministry and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), two people aware of the matter said, adding that the new norms may come into effect from 2027. Newer and cleaner technologies help car makers accrue super credits, which help them meet the limits set under CAFE norms for passenger cars, said Mr Sharif Qamar Associate Director, The Energy and Resources Institute (
Read moreThe Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in a first-of-its-kind detailed study will analyse the presence of microplastics in the Yamuna and groundwater in Delhi and assess the source and cause behind the frothing in the river in certain seasons. After completing the study, TERI will provide remedies. Scientists at TERI said that the study, proposed by Delhi govt in Dec 2021, will take a year. The aim would be to identify and prioritise groundwater sources (aquifers) and to map

Mr Prosanto Pal, Associate Director of the Industrial Energy Efficiency Division at The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), notes the environmental benefits of Kharja’s shift to natural gas, highlighting its minimal impact on
Read moreNet-zero emissions and green hydrogen are often mentioned together these days. At present, less than 1% of the hydrogen being produced is green, and that too in demonstration projects. Decarbonising the industrial sector and long-distance road transport, aviation, and shipping would be impossible unless green hydrogen is available. Green hydrogen is difficult to produce because of several factors. First, producing each kilogram needs 50 units of power, with a 70% efficiency of
Read moreThe Uttarakhand government has constituted two teams of experts to evaluate the risk posed by five potentially hazardous glacial lakes in the region. These lakes are prone to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), the kind of events that have resulted in several disasters in the Himalayan states in recent years. The goal of the risk assessment exercise is to minimise the possibility of a GLOF incident and provide more time for relief and evacuation in case of a breach.
Read moreClimate change is exacerbating an already disturbed system. Forests, wildlife and rural areas are all under pressure. Due to the socio-economic conditions in Uttarakhand, only women go to the forests for wood and fodder, hence both the burden of labour and climate threat are more on them. That is why women are also victims of human-wildlife conflict, says Ms Suruchi Bhadwal, Senior Fellow and Director, Earth Science and Climate Change Division, TERI.
Read moreAs the world's largest democracy heads for the polls, India's political parties have been concerningly quiet about climate change. Home to 1.4 billion people, India is among the most climate-vulnerable countries. Yet, discussions about climate action and sustainability are curiously absent in election campaigns and political narratives. Why isn't air quality a central discussion in the campaign, given that most Indian cities rank among the world’s most polluted and why is water security not
Read moreThe Union government on March 15 approved a policy to promote India as a manufacturing hub for electric vehicles (EVs). Broadly, the policy attempts to pave the way for global EV manufacturers to invest in India and to manufacture locally. "This will provide Indian consumers with access to latest technology, boost the Make in India initiative, strengthen the EV ecosystem by promoting healthy competition among EV players," the government stated, adding that this move would lead to
Read moreThe International Day of Zero Waste emphasises the critical need to bolster waste management globally and the importance of sustainable production and consumption practices. The Union Ministry for Environment, Forests and Climate Change (UMCD) is responsible for waste management in India. India's waste management regulations are predicated on the concepts of "polluter pays," "sustainable development," and "precaution." According to TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute), every year India

Upon completion, the project will cover 6.6 square kilometres of water surface and generate over 40.50 lakh units of electricity. Covering a water body's surface area up to a limit of 40 per cent minimises the impact on underwater ecology, according to Mr Sandeep Thakre, Associate Fellow, The Energy and
