The objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions aimed at reducing the levels of indoor air pollution in homes that use biomass fuels in the rural and urban settings of Andhra Pradesh on the basis of health risks and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by applying CHRA (comparative health risk assessment) procedures. The CHRA process seeks to rank various technological options available to reduce emissions and exposure so as to provide the basis for resource allocation for mitigating these problems.

The project aims to provide DFID with information on vulnerable regions in Africa through an overlay of climate vulnerability and poverty information for countries within Africa. TERI's methodology from the CIDA project was adopted and GIS was used to a tool to overlay climate vulnerability and poverty information. In the context of this study the International Livestock research Institute were the lead and TERI was engaged in the project to provide technical expertise on the various components that were being developed.

India is a water-stressed country and by the year 2025, it might fall in the category of water-scarce countries (Ministry of Water Resources, 2004). According to the World Health Organization, almost two-thirds of the global population without access to improved and safe water supply lives in Asia. Of this, about 25% live in India. In Delhi alone, groundwater depletion of more than 10-15 m has taken place in the past ten years and more than 20% of the annual health cases reported arise as a result of bacteriological contamination in drinking water.

Under this project a technical cell on Trade and Environment- related issues was set up in TERI in 2002 with the support of the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, to undertake research on the trade and environment interface in light of the current WTO negotiations.

The project is a part of the "Integrated Capacity Strengthening for Clean Development Mechanism (ICS-CDM)" program of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, being coordinated by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan. The goal of this program is to enable developing countries in Asia fully participate in CDM projects that contribute to sustainable development of host countries.

The objecitve is to enhance the production of oil wells. TERI in collaboration with the ISR (Institute of Reservoir Studies), ONGC, have jointly developed a thermophilic, barophilic anaerobic bacterial consortium for enhancing oil recovery in dead or abandoned oil wells. With the application of this thermophilic anaerobic bacterial consortium, 21% enhanced oil recovery from live oil-bearing core rocks was obtained under simulated conditions in selected oil wells in Gujarat oilfields.

The primary objective of the consulting services is to prepare a paper summarizing transport, energy efficiency and climate change impacts in India over the period to 2030. The paper will provide an input to a Policy and Investment Framework on Energy Efficiency and Climate Change in the Transport sector that is being prepared for the Asia Pacific region and will be one of several papers being prepared for discussion at the spring meeting of the IMF/World Bank in April 2006 and subsequent G8 meeting scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg in July 2006.

This study will primarily focus on the current scenario on biofuel development in India and assessment of the biofuel potential at the national level based on the economics and availability of resources. Four field visits and six desk studies will be carried out in order to get a better understanding of the field realities, issues, and challenges related to biofuels development. Further, evaluation of the national and international implications of large-scale biofuels development in India and opportunities for collaboration with the developed countries has been envisaged.
