Country level electronic waste management strategy for the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan

The Royal Kingdom of Bhutan has placed environmental conservation at the core of it's development strategy and the country is recognized as one of the few countries in the world with specific constitutional obligation to preserve the environment Bhutan¿s enviable reputation in environment conservation thus far is testimony of its commitment of pursuing sustainable development based on the philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

Growth of the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) sector is evident in Bhutan. The use of electrical and electronic equipments has increased manifold in Bhutan. The end of life management of electronic waste in Bhutan has lead to a concern for the environment.

In this context, TERI is associating with NIIT Ltd., to develop a country level e-waste management strategy for the Royal Kingdom of Bhutan through - developing draft rules and regulations for e-waste management; conducting awareness raising program for policy makers on operationalising e-waste management system; training local private sector operators and/or entrepreneurs for handling e-waste; developing a model request for proposal (RFP) for engaging entrepreneurs for managing e-waste.
