developing countries could be due to policies and institutions for local
environment in countries—say for countries like India and China.
The other factor is that renewable energy policies have been encouraged
to promote energy security, along with them being a cleaner source
of energy.
Transitioning to a low carbon development pathway would require
a wide diversity of technologies and innovation activities across
various sectors. As discussed in the chapter, there is an enormous
diversity of low carbon technologies across sectors, at many different
scales of development and diffusion. The relative maturity of various
technologies in the sectors is shown in Figure 1.10. The bars in the
figure indicate the areas where majority of activities are currently
focused upon, while R&D and early stage activities are ongoing in all
of these technology areas.
