Feasibility Study for a Pilot Project Comprising Biomass Gasifier, Heat Engine for Micro-Grid in Rural India

The work package aims to establish the technical feasibility of integrated solution i.e. biomass gasifier with Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) based combined heat and power (CHP) applications to meet the energy requirements of the agro industries, to map the potential clusters based on replication potential and shortlisting few pilot demonstration projects for enhancing income opportunities for the rural communities.

The activity included literature review, identification of cluster and technology and engaging with the stakeholders, manufacturers and end-users.

Achievements
The study developed a technology specification of biomass gasifier integrated ORC based CHP systems along with costing, replication potential economic viability, and payback periods which can lead to building few pilot demonstrations to enhance the confidence of the end-users and firm up the technoeconomic feasibility on the ground and the required policy support. Considering that the Biomass Power and Cogeneration Programme of Ministry of Non-Renewable Energy incentivizes the usage of ORC systems2 in biomass and cogeneration plants, the work done under this project provides support on the feasibility assessment of such systems for agro-industries. Additionally, the findings from the study also support the vision of the Prime Minister of India about an Aatmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India, by creating opportunities to improve rural livelihoods in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, dairy, and fishery-related activities. This has the potential to make the agriculture sector not only self-reliant but also more resilient to shocks and create more jobs and livelihood opportunities for the suddenly increased rural population due to urban rural migration during the COVID-18 pandemic, along with emission mitigation potential.

E-workshop on projects funded under Norwegian Framework Agreement between the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and TERI
