Agriculture is not restricted to just farmers and farmlands anymore but extends much beyond conventional practices to emerge as one of the most vibrant sectors of the Indian economy. The three-day Krishi-Dhan 2011 conference, inaugurated by Shri Ganesh Naik, Hon’ble Minister, New and Renewable Energy, GoM on 28 April 2011 was thus aimed at creating awareness and knowledge sharing between stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

In recent years, technological revolution has helped reveal the tremendous potential in the agrarian sector. The opportunities in this sector need to be further tapped and explored. For example, agri technologies are no more limited just to the farm applications, but it has grown to encompass pre-harvest, harvest, and post-harvest processes. Biotechnology, food processing, packaging, transportation, and other sunrise sectors, such as organic farming, have all been integrated in the agrarian lifecycle.

It is necessary to project the potential of this sector in the right perspective to urban youth, financial institutions, investors, and other stakeholders. While the agri producers are battling to attain maximum crop production using meagre resources to feed the ever growing population, impacts of climate change and global warming is further complicating the situation rendering agriculture as one of the most vulnerable sectors.

Often, it is observed that in the background of glamorous and attractive white collared jobs, people regard agriculture as a menial profession due to lack of appropriate awareness, infrastructure, support, and opportunities. Even the "gen next" agriculturists are not keen to take up the profession and continue the legacy. Taken together, apathy towards the sector may lead to serious implications on food security and sustainable development of our nation.

Realizing this need, TERI conceived a Green to Evergreen initiative titled "Krishi-Dhan, 2011", with the following objectives:

  • Involvement cross sectoral stake holders
  • Introduce the stakeholders to various renewable energy and modern energy efficient technologies that can be integrated for domestic and commercial applications in rural and urban India.
  • Revolutionize agricultural practices by
  • Motivating the youth to consider agri as mainstream profession.
  • Modernizing of the sector by integrating diverse approaches and technologies.
  • Introducing options for additional revenue generation through avenues such as agro tourism.
  • Sensitizing the stake holders to the possible impacts of climate change on agriculture and jointly devising the mitigation strategies.

The event and all its side events were well received and more than 2500 people attended the exhibition and participated in the conference and training programs. The positive impacts were analyzed and recorded on the basis of increase in the market linkages of the products exhibitors displayed at the event and also increase in the level of awareness related to green and sustainable technologies.
