It is a strategic engagement establishment build between TERI, India and Deakin University, Australia. Since its inception in November 2010 TDNBC has made significant strides in developing nanonutrients, nanopesticides and nanoformulations to address the challenges related to deteriorating soil health, food demand and water safety.

Recognised as one of Australia's leading materials research organisations, IFM addresses societal challenges through innovations in materials design and performance. IFM makes use of the Deakin University's strong research capability in materials science to tackle complex problems in the areas of energy, health, environment and manufacturing.

Green and chemical synthesis of polymeric nanoparticles (silk proteins/alginate/chitosan etc.), metallic nanoparticles followed by surface functionalization towards application in medical science will be covered.

Fruits and vegetables undergo many physiological changes during postharvest storage that can be overcome by use of edible coatings prepared from natural polymers that are non-toxic, economical, and readily available. Effectiveness of edible coatings can be improved by the incorporation of antimicrobial agents. To further improve edible coatings nano –emulsification has emerged as an effective alternative to improve the quality and shelf-life of fresh food and this will be covered in this theme.

Natural biopolymer based nanoparticles prepared from biodegradable and biocompatible polymers represent an excellent strategic option for controlled, delayed and targeted delivery of fertilizers, micro-nutrients including other necessary bio-stimulators; preparing nano-formulations through emulsions and encapsulations of insoluble organic compounds of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides etc. for increased efficacy with reduced dose and targeted delivery of disease controlling molecules etc.

Natural colours are broadly classified as natural organic colours from vegetable and animal source and mineral colours of inorganic pigments. The organic colour stuffs are obtained from roots, stems, leaves, barks, flowers and berries of various plants and from certain insects and shellfish. Recently development and applications of nano particles derived from natural source such as plants or animals are gaining attention due to the high cost and environmental hazard of the petroleum and mineral derived products.

TERI’s patented technology on AM fungal bio fertiliser is incorporated in this module. This technology has been in existence through TERI and globally only technology to produce mycorrhiza in sterile environment thereby adopted by North American and Indian Industries. The technology has received many awards and currently 1.2-2 million hectares of land is being benefitted due to the product produced by this technology.

In agriculture, utilization of seed treatments with micro-organisms is widely known to enhance the uptake of nutrients, nitrogen fixation, providing disease resistance and increase plant growth. Seeds are often coated for ease of handling, precise placement, singulation and incorporation of beneficial microbes.
