TERI, headquartered in New Delhi, India, is an autonomous, not-for-profit international think tank, actively engaged in multi-disciplinary research on natural resource management and conservation for more than three decades. Since its establishment in 1974, TERI has emerged as a world leader in sustainable development research, and works globally with various countries and multilateral organizations. TERI has an extensive global outreach, with affiliate institutes in North America and Europe and active presence in CIS countries, Central Asia and Middle East, South Asia, Japan, and Africa. Through its research, TERI has made significant contribution to the international climate debate, especially by representing a developing country perspective wherein efficient use of natural resources and protection of the environment are seen as essential prerequisites for economic welfare.
The Water Resource Division (WRD) in TERI was formed with a vision to develop solutions for providing equitable access to clean water, while ensuring social, environmental, and economic sustainability in water resource allocation. The WRD focuses its activities on two convening areas, Water Resource Policy and Management (WRPM), which works on various apects related to the water sector and Center for Himalayan Ecology (CHE), which conducts focused activites on regional ecology in Himalayan states and nations and research on glacial phenomenon, a topic rapidly gaining interest. The division comprises a multi-disciplinary team of engineers (civil, chemical, environmental, and water resources), ground/surface water modeling experts, hydrogeologists, water supply and sanitation specialists, geologists, architects, planners, economists, and sociologists.
In recognition of TERI's pioneering efforts in water resource conservation and management, the Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF) supported by PUB Singapore, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) endorsed TERI as the Knowledge Hub for Water and Climate Change Adaptation in South Asia in 2009. This initiative intends to encourage knowledge sharing among partners from the South Asian countries through various modes and enhance their capacity to adapt to climate change.
