Development of a community-based model for better environmental management and rejuvenation of river Nambi - interventions at Thirukkurungudi

Study and analyse present environmental status of the village in terms of solid waste management, sanitation, and wastewater management.Assess the impacts on the river Nambi due to inefficient environmental management in the village and suggest its rejuvenation.
Assess energy use pattern for cooking and demonstrate use of biogas plants using cowdung.
Evolve detailed schemes and facilitate their implementation in a pilot area of the village.
Develop leadership within village communities for effective intervention.
Regional training workshop on remote village electrification

It was established at the start of the 9th Five Year Plan that of the nearly 80,000 un-electrified villages in the country, 18,000 villages are located in remote and geographically isolated areas where it would be impossible or very expensive to lay transmission lines and provide electricity through extensions of the existing grid. High priority is being accorded by the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources (MNES) to remote village electrification through non-conventional energy resources such as biomass, small hydro, solar energy, wind energy, hybrid systems, etc..Joint scoping study for analysing the programatic linkages and institutional arrangements for mainstreaming environment

In an attempt to sensitise the young minds, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power has set the ball rolling in the form of an innovative programme addressing the need for awareness on energy conservation within the school network through formal and non- formal approaches. This included a series of sensitization programmes and an attempt to develop draft recommendations on a national curriculum on energy conservation for classes 6 - 9 in schools across the country.
