Can Nuclear Replace Boal-based Electricity in India?
"Coal provides a pragmatic solution in the short term given its affordability, abundance, job creation potential, and the country’s developmental needs. However, its share in the energy mix has to come down progressively. This is important for the transition to a net zero energy scenario. Nuclear power aligns more closely with India’s vision for a low-carbon future. India is well poised to move ahead on nuclear power development. Addressing the challenges of high capital costs, safety concerns, and waste management is important in this context," writes K Ramanathan, Distinguished Fellow; Dr Arunendra Kumar Tiwari, Associate Fellow, TERI, in their op-ed for 360info.org.

India's Water Future
“Enhancing innovative water related climate policy actions, strengthening the generation of scientific evidence on causes and impact of climate change on water resources and promoting dialogue and partnerships among countries should be adopted. These are critical for India to achieve not only its targets for SDG 6 relating to water and sanitation but many other targets of various SDGs by 2030”, write Dr SK Sarkar, Distinguished Fellow, TERI; and Dr Girija K Bharat, Managing Director, Mu Gamma Consultants Pvt Ltd, in their op-ed for The Statesman.

India Moving into Global Leadership on Climate Change
“In a world where trust in multilateralism is eroding, India’s ability to bring diverse stakeholders together offers a model for a cooperative, equitable, and sustainable future. As the sun rises on a new chapter in global climate action, India is lighting the way. It is not merely a participant in the global climate dialogue—it is shaping its trajectory. This is leadership by inspiration", write Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri, Distinguished Fellow; and Dr Shailly Kedia, Associate Director, in their op-ed for Gulf Today.

Protecting India’s electrical industry: Imperative for an efficient copper recycling regime
"India’s electrical industry is at a critical juncture. As the country continues to grow as a global manufacturing hub, it is essential that we do not compromise the quality of the materials that power our infrastructure. Reducing the customs duty on copper scrap to zero could have long-lasting negative consequences for the industry, the environment, and public health", writes Souvik Bhattacharjya, Associate Director, TERI, in his op-ed for The Economic Times.

Annual budget processes are crucial for planning and assessment and serve as an important entry point for mainstreaming climate action and environment-related SDG targets into planning processes. Institutionalizing green budgeting can foster active mindsets within departments and lead to better planning and coordination within the existing fiscal space. Thus, green budgets can be a useful tool to mainstream sustainable development horizontally across departments. With this rationale, TERI organized a Webinar on Green Budgeting on 10th January 2025, virtually. TERI colleagues also discussed the open-access toolkit for green budgeting available on the Green Budgeting Portal.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into academia is revolutionizing education, research, and administrative practices on a global scale. As AI reshapes the landscape of higher education and scholarly inquiry, it unlocks unprecedented opportunities for innovation. However, this rapid advancement also brings significant ethical challenges. Issues such as algorithmic bias, data misuse, lack of transparency, and threats to academic integrity have raised serious concerns about the responsible use of AI within educational institutions. In this context, a hybrid seminar—the second in the joint webinar series organized by TERI, IGNOU, and UNESCO—offered a dedicated platform for academic and research scholars to examine these challenges and opportunities. The event aimed to equip academia with the tools and insights needed to address ethical concerns while fostering responsible innovation in AI.
