TERI at the International Solar Festival: Exhibition and Plenary Session |

TERI organized an electric tractor and farm equipment exhibition as well as a plenary session at the first ‘International Solar Festival’ hosted by the International Solar Alliance on September 5 and 6, 2024 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India. The exhibition was based on the theme of ‘Sustainable Agricultural Practices’ highlighting India’s advancements and potential in solar-based e-mobility solutions for the agriculture sector. The showcase was graced by Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), who highlighted the significance of integrating solar energy with electric farm equipment. To further highlight the transformative power of e-mobility adoption, TERI organized a plenary session on ‘From the Ground Up: Impact Stories on Communities’. The session showcased inspiring success stories from global pioneers comprising an all-women panel and reflected upon various e-mobility initiatives across the Global South.

Indian Railways and TERI: Launch of Goods Shed Rating Dashboard

Indian Railways, in collaborative effort with the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and TERI, launched the Goods Shed Rating Dashboard on September 6, 2024, an innovative tool, designed to revolutionize the assessment and improvement of performance of goods shed across the Indian Railway network. The dashboard aims to provide star ratings to terminals based on assessment of various parameters indicative of overall efficiency and capacity. The dashboard will enable identification of areas for improvement, investment prioritization, and operation optimization.

TERI organized a workshop on ‘Decarbonizing the Perishable Supply Chain via Dedicated Freight Corridor’ in collaboration with Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) on August 8, 2024. Led by Mr Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow with support from Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Associate Director and Ms Viral Joshi, Associate Fellow, the focus of the discussion was on the transition to Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service through the dedicated freight corridors (DFC). The workshop witnessed active engagement of stakeholders from DFCCIL, Railway Board, the National Dairy Development Board, Mother Dairy, Banas Dairy, logistics and wagon leasing providers, electric truck manufacturers, and think tanks. The discussions focused on understanding the feasibility of Ro-Ro service for the perishable movement on DFC routes, as well as to assess the scope and identify potential pathways to scale up the Ro-Ro operations to cater to the larger demand.

TERI organized a workshop on ‘Comprehensive Assessment of Job Impacts and Skill Gaps in Transitioning from ICE to Electric Trucks’ at IIT Madras, in partnership with the Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking (CoEZET), IIT Madras, on August 7, 2024. The workshop brought together diverse stakeholders including representatives from the government, DISCOMs, financial institutions, training institutes, think tanks, and certification agencies. The discussion revolved around four themes: identification of new skills within the truck ecosystem, potential job impacts of the transition, challenges in workforce skilling, and need for reskilling with uptake of EVs.

| TERI collaborates with Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India for expansion of ‘Sustainability Garage Initiative’ |

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) announced the expansion of its Sustainability Garage initiative at the Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2024 on September 3, 2024. Under this initiative, MBRDI is collaborating with TERI to set up a Centre of Excellence in New Delhi focusing on charging infrastructure. This centre aims to offer specialized training programmes for maintaining charging infrastructure, with the goal of certifying 60 young professionals by the end of the year.

| TERI convenes the inaugural ‘Margdarshak Meeting’ for the Vizag- Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab |

TERI convened an advisory committee for the Vizag-Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL). This committee was formed in the inaugural ‘Margdarshak Meeting,’ uniting diverse stakeholders in Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2024. The committee included representatives from government, academia, industry, and civil society to address climate resilience. The stakeholders engaged in an in-depth and productive discussion, focusing on the challenge of urban flooding.

| TERI workshops on Social Cartography and Co-creation of Solutions |

TERI facilitated engagement of community members as part V-PULL workshops on social cartography and co-creation of solutions in Visakhapatnam. These workshops included hands-on mapping exercises, urban flooding sensitization, and observation mapping. The event brought together students, NGO workers, and local community leaders, with support from the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC). The community engagement also witnessed certificate distribution by the GVMC Commissioner to student volunteers who supported in the mapping activity previously in the city.

TERI, in collaboration with GIZ India and supported by Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), organized an ideation workshop on ‘Climate-Sensitive and Participatory Urban Planning’ in Coimbatore on August 2, 2024. The workshop was part of the Urban Act project undertaken by TERI. Shri Sivaguru Prabakaran, CCMC’s Municipal Commissioner, delivered the keynote address, advocating for a “Make-recreate-recorrect-revise” approach in urban planning initiatives.

| TERI at launch of report on ‘Assessing India’s Enabling Framework Conditions for Subnational Climate Finance’ |

TERI, represented by Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, delivered closing remarks at the launch of the report titled ‘Assessing India’s Enabling Framework Conditions for Subnational Climate Finance,’ by United Nations ESCAP, Climate Policy Initiative, GIZ India, and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) under the Urban Act project on September 6, 2024. In his address, Mr Seth highlighted the need to build city officials’ capacity to create scalable and bankable projects and attract sustainable investments. TERI experts including Mr Seth, Ms Rhea Srivastava, Associate Fellow, Ms Shiren Pandita, Associate Fellow and Ms Harshita Kaur, Research Associate provided key technical inputs for the report to shape its findings. Mr Seth acknowledged contributions of all partners involved in advancing climate finance solutions.

| TERI participates in Indian delegation hosted by Transport & Environment in Brussels |

TERI was part of the Indian delegation participating in the four-day workshop organized by Transport & Environment (T&E) on ‘Electric Vehicle and Batteries Supply Chain Policy’ from September 23–26, 2024, in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop brought together participants from different civil society organizations and stakeholders from India and Belgium. The workshop focused on exchanging expertise in advocating for sustainable transport policies and included discussions on European Union and Indian policy dynamics around clean technologies. During the weeklong workshop, the Indian delegation met stakeholders from the European Commission, auto manufacturers association, recyclers, non-governmental organization working in the field of electric vehicles and batteries, and advisors to the Member of European Parliament. A field visit to Umicore’s recycling plant at Hoboken, also gave an insight into the processing stages, procurement of input materials/scraps, quality checks, as well as safety precautions undertaken by one of the largest recyclers in Europe.

The Pre-Flag-Off conference, themed ‘Driving the Future: Innovations and Strategies for Zero Emissions,’ emphasized the need to bridge financial, infrastructure and policy gaps to reform the EV ecosystem.

TERI, represented by Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Associate Director, participated in two panel discussions at the concluding event of Phase I of the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia Project in India, organized by GIZ on August 23, 2024. The first session titled ‘FAME-II Scheme and Considerations for a potential Next Phase’ evoked discussions on effectiveness of FAME II in EV infrastructure creation while building upon the lessons to create strategic and tailored plans for states and cities. The second session titled ‘Guidelines for Electric Vehicle Policy in Indian States with a Focus on the Passenger and Freight Segment’ explored lessons from state-level EV deployment and highlighted the need for policy support, fiscal incentives, charging infrastructure expansion and ecosystem capacity building for transition to electric trucks.

TERI, represented by Mr I V Rao, Distinguished Fellow, participated in a session on ‘ZEV Alliance: Technology, Policy and Infrastructure for E-Tractors in India’ in the ‘India Clean Transportation Summit’ organized by International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) during August 28–29, 2024. Mr Rao advocated for bringing the cost of purchase down, offering concessional electricity rates, and providing incentives to boost e-tractor adoption.

Ms Chauhan discussed the work done by TERI on Life cycle assessment of National Highways at the pre-conference workshop organized by Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology and IIT Madras in association with Kerala Infrastructure and Investment Board (KIIFB) on September 25, 2024, in Thiruvananthapuram. Ms Chauhan also discussed important parameters of green rating systems for National Highways.

Ms Viral Joshi, Associate Fellow and Mr Faiz Jamal, Associate Fellow participated in a five-day executive training programme (July 8–12, 2024) on ‘Preparation of City Logistics Plans’ by the Centre of Excellence in City Logistics Management, School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal. The five-day training programme was aimed at providing detailed insights into different aspects of the city logistics planning, along with on-ground exercise for different markets in Bhopal. The training programme consisted of lectures focusing on different aspects of CLP preparation, such as policy landscape, stakeholder identification, data acquisition and analysis, statutory framework, land use planning, supply chain optimization, scenario development, safety, and decarbonization.

Dr Rahul Chakraborty, Associate Fellow delivered an online lecture on ‘Behavioural and Experimental Economics in Addressing Urban Issues’ at the School of Planning and Architecture, Bhopal on September 25, 2024. Dr Chakraborty discussed methodologies used by experimental economists in transportation research and presented insights from literature on EV adoption, thermal retrofitting of buildings, urban landscaping, and nudging towards sustainable mobility.

Ms Ruchika Mattoo, Associate Fellow participated in a roundtable discussion on ‘Magnetic Maharashtra: Leveraging the PPP for Last Mile Connectivity’ hosted by US–India Strategic Partnership Forum in Mumbai on July 26, 2024. The roundtable featured a keynote address by Mr Sanjay Sethi, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Transport and Ports, Government of Maharashtra, with special remarks from Mr R Ramana, Director of Planning, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL). The discussion evolved around the existing concerns and recommendations for last-mile connectivity for Mumbai city.
