TERI at Conference of Parties (COP29) in Azerbaijan
TERI delegation participated in multiple events in COP29. Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) for the scope of work on ‘The Role of Clean Energy Policies: Trends in India’s Transport Sector’.

Mr. Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Programme, TERI participated as a speaker in the session 'Mobilizing Urban Infrastructure for Net Zero Emissions'. The session was part of the workshop ‘From global climate targets to local implementation: Energy and transport infrastructure at a critical juncture’ jointly organized by King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Centre (KAPSARC), The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) and World Energy Council (WEC).

The full-day workshop explored how innovative approaches to sustainable infrastructure can close the implementation gap, focusing on 1.) decarbonization pathways for low-carbon energy sources and transport; 2.) transport and urban infrastructure; and 3.) the integration of financial strategies to unlock capital.


TERI at the Mobilizing Urban Infrastructure for Net Zero Emissions session in the Conference of Parties (COP29) in Azerbaijan

Mr Sharif Qamar, Fellow and Associate Director, TERI participated at the side event at COP29, Azerbaijan titled ‘Decarbonization of the Transport Sector and the Role of Alternate Fuels'. It was jointly organized by KAPSARC and Institute of Energy Economics, Japan - IEEJ. TERI pressed upon India’s commitment and policy signals towards alternate fuel, including the constitution of Global Biofuels Alliance at the G20 Summit of 2023 in New Delhi. Mr Qamar spoke about the challenges in the route of transport decarbonization and India as a developing country and the sustained efforts towards low-carbon growth trajectory. He suggested that the first principle of transport decarbonization involves a combined strategy of avoid, shift, improve and fuel (ASIF) framework. Mr Qamar also spoke about the status of ethanol and biodiesel blending in India and the demand of alternate fuel in the shipping sector. India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) shall be driving the demand for alternate cleaner fuels.

TERI Hosted Multiple Sessions at the World Urban Forum (WUF)
TERI hosted a session on ‘Improving Quality of Life in Cities through Sustainable and EV-Ready Transport Investments’ at World Urban Forum 12, Egypt, in collaboration with European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Transport for Cairo. The session was moderated by Mr Tali Trigg, EBRD. The Panellists included Ms Ketevan Makharashvili, Tbilisi Transport and Urban Development Agency, Ms Judith Adem Owigar, UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), Mr Sanjay Seth, TERI, Ms Yasmine Sabek, Transport for Cairo. The session discussed about the possible decarbonizing transport alternatives in cities and the ecosystem requirements for same.


TERI hosted a session on Improving Quality of Life in Cities through Sustainable and EV-Ready Transport Investments at WUF 12 Egypt

TERI hosted an engaging Case Clinic Discussion on Digitalization, Emerging Technologies, and Justice in a Changing Climate at World Urban Forum 12, Egypt. The session was moderated by Ms Shiren Pandita, Area Convener and Associate Fellow, TERI. The panellists included Ms Judith Commenges, Head of Section Urban Development, Infrastructure and Mobility, IKI Office at ZUG, Germany, Dr Sandile Mbatha (PhD), Chief Data Officer, Local Government Operations and Support, Department of Cooperative Governance, South Africa, Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, TERI, India, Mr Himanshu Shekhar, Associate Academic Officer, UNU-EHS, Germany, Mr Sarath Babu M G, Lead, Climate Center for Cities, NIUA, India. The session provided actionable insights on how equitable digitalization can drive climate resilience while fostering justice in communities across the Global South.

TERI also hosted an Urban Library event on Towards Climate Responsive Urban Planning at the World Urban Forum 12, Egypt in collaboration with GIZ India and Egyptian Syndicate of Engineers. TERI’s whitepaper on Integrating Climate Sensitivity into Urban Planning for Future Resilience, as part of the Urban-Act project was released at the session. The session explored strategies for embedding climate resilience into urban planning, highlighting approaches that integrate climate sensitivity into the core of city development and management. It introduced frameworks and best practices to help cities effectively incorporate climate priorities into their planning processes.

TERI hosted a session and launched a policy brief on Facilitating Zero-Emission Deliveries for Postal Services at World Urban Forum 12 Egypt. The session was moderated by Mr Sharif Qamar, TERI. The panellists included Mr Tali Trigg, EBRD, Ms Trupti Deshpande, E-Mobility Expert, Mr. Elshan Z.A, AzerPost. TERI acknowledged the support provided by the Department of Post and India Post circles in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad.

TERI Launched Report on Roadmap for India’s Energy Transition in the Transport Sector

TERI launched its flagship report, Roadmap for India’s Energy Transition in the Transport Sector, which provides a comprehensive forecast of India's transport demand through 2070–71. Utilizing TERI’s in-house transport model (TERI–TptM) with a 2019/20 baseline, the report examines the baseline emission trajectory and evaluates the potential fuel demand and emission reduction benefits of various technology-driven mitigation strategies. The report release was followed by a roundtable discussion on India’s Energy Transition in the Transport Sector: Integrating Transport with NDC. Esteemed dignitaries from Railway Board, Government of India, Shri K. R. K Reddy (Additional Member, Traffic) and Shri Mukul Saran Mathur (Additional Member, Commercial) delivered the special address. Mr Sanjay Seth, Senior Director and Mr Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow highlighted the importance of taking timely actions by the stakeholders for reducing the transport related emissions. TERI team including Dr Rahul Chakraborty, Associate Fellow, Ms Shreya Gupta, Research Associate and Ms Akshaya Paul, Research Associate provided key technical inputs for the report to shape its findings.

TERI at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI)

The Institute of Urban Transport (IUT) India, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) organized the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) conference in Gandhinagar during 25–27 October 2024. TERI organized a roundtable on Streamlining Urban Freight to explore innovative solutions for efficient, sustainable urban logistics. The roundtable was attended by several key stakeholders from the transport and logistics sectors including the government officials and the policy makers. Key speakers in the roundtable discussions included Dr Vikas Kumar MD, DMRC, Mr E Srinivas, Joint Secretary DPIIT, Mr Jaideep (OSD, MoHUA, Mr Amegh Gopinath, GIZ India, Mr Sudeept Maiti, World Bank. Mr Uday Narang, Omega Seiki Mobility, and Dr Abhijit Lokre, The Urban Lab.

Ms Shreya Gupta, Research Associate, TERI also presented a paper (co-authored with Ms Akshaya Paul, Research Associate) on Investigating the Trade-off between Transfers and Transit Time in Public Transport: Case Study of Delhi NCR in the Research Symposium held at 17th Urban Mobility India conference during 25–27 October 2024.
TERI at Climate Action Week 2024

TERI expressed its views during the Climate Action Week 2024, organized by the Centre for Science and Environment at its Neemli Centre. The event brought India’s leading researchers, experts, and grassroots activists together to discuss the critical issues in decarbonization of transport sector.

TERI representative participated in the session on Decarbonization pathways for transport sector: Transforming mobility held on 18 October 2024. Mr Sharif Qamar spoke on the topic Increasing rail share in freight transport in India. Highlighting the challenges restricting railways increased share in the fright transport sector.

TERI hosted team Solar Butterfly at TERI Retreat in Gwal Pahari. Team Solar Butterfly is on a mission, as part of their global journey, to promote sustainable solutions in the fight against climate change. Till 2025, the team will visit 90 countries across 6 continents, engaging with climate pioneers and sharing innovative solutions to combat global warming. The Solar Butterfly’s mission highlighted the critical importance of collaborative action in driving forward clean energy adoption. Its focus on renewable energy, electric mobility, and climate action, strongly aligns with TERI’s vision of advancing sustainable development.

TERI Organized a Session on Beyond Smart Cities: India’s Way Forward in Transforming Cities

TERI organized a brainstorming session on Beyond Smart Cities: India’s Way Forward in Transforming Cities on 28 October 2024, as part of its celebrations for Urban October. The session was moderated by Mr Shri Prakash, Distinguished Fellow at TERI, and featured experts from the urban domain who provided valuable insights. With the Smart Cities Mission, a major flagship initiative, approaching completion, the session emphasized the need to envision the future of Indian cities in alignment with international commitments, national priorities, and local needs. The session sought to identify key drivers for transforming Indian cities and the enabling frameworks required to support such transitions, establishing foundational pillars for planning future development agendas. The experts also engaged in an interactive exercise, followed by a roundtable discussion. The insights from the brainstorming session will help in the development of a discussion paper on the same topic. Through this discussion paper, TERI aims to foster the development of future trajectories for Indian cities, offering a road map for urban transformation and leveraging the advancements already taking place in cities across India.

TERI at ET Infra Leadership Summit 2024

Dr Rahul Chakraborty, Associate Fellow, TERI shared his expert insights at the ET Infra Leadership Summit 2024. TERI expressed that the demand assessment is the key in planning our infrastructure development and the associate investments. Dr Rahul mentioned about TERI’s recent report titled Roadmap for India's Energy Transition in the Transport Sector which projects transport demand till 2070–71 and assesses the implications of different decarbonization pathways on fuel demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

TERI Organized the Operation Support Team (OST) Meeting under the Vizag Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL) in Visakhapatnam

TERI organized the Operation Support Team (OST) meeting under the Vizag Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL) initiative at GITAM Deemed University, Visakhapatnam, under the Project T-CAP. The session brought together key stakeholders to plan for flood-proofing neighbourhoods in Vizag. The key outcomes of the discussion are the formation of task forces with clear timelines and defined roles, commitments from stakeholders for technical assistance, resource allocation, and capacity building and strong focus on effective implementation and sustained engagement.

TERI Participated in the URBAN ACT Project Planning Workshop in Coimbatore

TERI took part in the project planning workshop for the Urban Act project in Coimbatore, deliberating on the 2024 achievements and way forward for 2025. The workshop was organized by GIZ India in collaboration with Urban Act GIZ partners from China, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand. It focused on the strategic direction and retrospective of the project for 2025. TERI along with National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), being the India implementing partner, hosted a breakout session for the workshop participants on the topic Mainstreaming Climate Action, Climate Sensitive Spatial Planning for our cities. The workshop also witnessed the presence of all Indian consortium partners for the Urban Act project along with city officials from Shimla, Panaji, and Coimbatore. The workshop proved crucial for the management and steering of the project, strengthening internal communication and collaboration between country and regional partners.

TERI Visited Deendayal Port Authority at Kandla, Gujarat

TERI visited Deendayal Port Authority at Kandla, Gujarat as a part of its project—Preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Just in Time Arrival of Ships at Indian ports. The visit was carried out by Mr Abhishek Koka of the Transport and Urban Governance Division, who engaged with various port officials to collect data and noted their views. A port visit was conducted to document the port and operations.
